Classic British Flight Sim

Well, they're new to me, anyway. Somebody mentioned them in a post on Avsim yesterday so I had a look and downloaded three today to try out. There are several more and the simpler ones are for iPhone and the ones with more dials are for iPad. They all work fine on the iPad anyway. Pricewise they don't break the bank. I paid £8 total for the three from the App store. They require a small free download of software which connects the sim to the App. They are designed for FSX but these work fine in P3D with no extra fiddling. I've only done a quick trial but they work very well and are simple to set up.

The pics are of the Map App which has a choice of several maps (this is Google Earth) and of other things like a/c icons. It works with FS .PLN files as well. The screenie shows the sim screen relating to the App. The reason I'm not following the GPS course is because of the mountains

How many iPads do you need to run that lot on £8 for 3 apps and a further £1400 for another couple of iPads

You can have lots of apps open at the same time and just swipe the screen to move to the next. And if you've got an iPad sitting around (highly recommended, by the way ) then it will save you the cost of another monitor.

I read a statistic the other day. More people read The Times iPad edition than read The Independent in any format. Loads of people use them on the train nowadays.

It was rather tongue in cheek I know I'm just not an iPad sort of bloke though mate. Not being able to afford one helps there I'm amazed at what lengths they go to to sell this stuff. One of my customers at the pub (the marketing director for Yell.com) started with a Kindle and as soon as the iPad came out, he had one of those. NOW.. you can get an iPad mini. What's that all about? Is the iPad mini to stave off competition from the other 'tablet' manufacturers?

I'm not a technophobe by any means.. Just can't see the point in having an iPad when I have X amount of pc's (and screens) and a laptop for the living room for the good lady to play on. My mobile contract doesn't include internet and to be honest, when I'm out.. I can do without 'going online' I'm sure they're great though.. like all the other android phones and tablets you can buy.

I'm really starting to run out of reasons not to own an iSomething. I want the radios to be on a separate networked computer, so I can use the mousewheel for that one to adjust the radio frequencies, while the mousewheel on my FS computer is used for elevator trim. It looks like I'm going to be able to have that with Plan G v3 installed on my laptop, and networked to P3D via SimConnect. Haven't got round to setting that up yet, but here's the radio stack you get in Plan G v3;



Not as pretty as the iPad ones, of course, but functional.

By the way Ian...you'd think they would know how to spell 'flightplan' wouldn't you.

I've been amusing myself on the train (with my iPad) thinking of reasons why it's the absolutest best ever gadget that I've ever owned despite me wondering why I would need one - it took less than two days before it became indispensable

It's the size of a small, slim magazine that will slip in a large coat or anorak pocket. It is SSD so instant off/on and has a battery life of 9 hours. It has a display of 2048x1536 pixels on a 10 inch screen and even newsprint fully zoomed in will display no pixelation. The colours are gorgeous and the animations make it fun to use. Here's what mine does:

It's my daily newspaper downloaded every morning in a few seconds available from 0330 at half the price of paper. It's my book using downloads to the Kindle App. I download magazines to it whenever I fancy, cheaper and easier than paper. It's my calendar, address book, alarm clock, notepad, reminder list, web browser, email client, world atlas, street map, GPS sat nav, TV, video player, music player, photo album, camera, video camera, games console, wifi hotspot, PDF library with thousands of pages of work reference manuals on it.

There are hundreds of thousands of cheap and free apps available to do other things. Mine include FS accessories, dictionary/thesaurus, live train, bus, traffic and tube info and journey planners, twitter, BBC News, Sky News, iPlayer, TV catchup, digital radio, Flight radar, ship finder, bird song identifier and many more ....

That's what mine does for me and it's always close by. You can customise it do what you want. So instead of asking what would I do with one, I now ask 'what would I do without one'

I just thought I'd try and explain the attraction, which is difficult to someone who hasn't got one.

Indeed Ian, it is a gorgeous bit of kit, and yes, sometimes these things create their own reasons for having one. However, the thing is I already own a desktop, a laptop, and a mobile phone - and an Ipad would be in addition to, not 'instead of' what I already have. Other than when I travel into London or go over to the USA, it simply wouldn't get used enough to justify the purchase price. And I'm a bit concerned about ebooks because the more we move over to them, the more likely places like Foyles or Motorbooks near Trafalgar Square will end up as another fekkin Starbucks !

I might get an iPhone however, because that definitely would be an 'instead of' item. Both my daughters have one, and they have been showing me all the amazing things they can do. Very impressive !
