Sound Balance

Gentlemen,
the laptop I run FS9 on recently crashed.
Lucky me nothing seems lost at first glance but FS seems to have reset itself to default settings. One good side effect is, that my 1-11 now smokes like Churchill or chancellor Schmidt. (Dave, I'm finally sorted!!)
However there's one strange sound issue I couldn't solve panning around the VC:
when I pan 90 deg to the right engine sounds are turning enormously loud - when I pan 90 deg to the left they're gone and only outside atmosphere is left.
If FS9 was a HiFi or Car Stereo I would search for "Balance" or "Fade". But in FS settings I couldn't find anything similar and sound settings only allow a percentage of volume to be set.
Any ideas on how I could get that back to more realism?
Many thanks in advance & best regards,
Nick
