It was only a little bit too

If No.2 Sqn RFC were tasked with establishing a base at Montrose, where were they before.. dossing around in tents at Croydon or Hendon.. somewhere like that? *-) Serious question believe it or not  Which came first.. the airbase or the aeroplanes (chicken and egg) *-)

It was the nagging wife, Dave. Why do you think the blokes ( both hither and yonder) hid out in thier garage's in the first place.

The airplane was a master escape plan.
the was no airfield just... Field.

as far as the chicken and the egg.

The chicken, eggs need tending to.
That's in keeping with the idear, which ever of the two were just ,you know- ((boop)) , There. .

like the saying.

opps there it is!
:)

Ben,

I have a question for you.

why is it the chaps in the photo starting from the second chap on right, are all leaning away from far right chap.

And also, a very interesting article.

Yes Joe.. quite right :worried:

Montrose manages to be listed everywhere as the first military airfield (or should that be air base??) appearing in 1913 and yet the first Army aerodrome was at Larkhill in 1910 :dunno:

Indeed Dave, I think there is some differences of opinion as to whether or not the original RAF (Royal Aircraft Factory) fields count. To my mind Larkhall must be the original one.

Me too mate

I know my question seemed a little tongue in cheek but the more I thought about it, the less logical it became that Montrose was the first military airfield. The RFC started as part of the Army.. hence it's connection with doon sooth (Larkhill/Salisbury) and was split in two.. the RN having the other half. Larkhill does seem to be 'officially' the first Army airfield and this preceeded Montrose by 2 years. That said.. there must be something in the Montrose claim to back it up but I can't make out what it is. Whether the other airfields were 'civvie' and became military.. it's difficult to tell but 'history' doesn't tell the story particularly well

I found an interesting site about 2 Sqn RFC, the first Sqn to move into Montrose, which includes a daily log. They spent much time zipping across the channel.. staying for a few days to do whatever it was they were tasked to do then they'd fly back to Blighty to their home bases which were all in the south.. Larkhill/Salisbury/Stonehenge.. then fly back to France again when needed and when the weather permitted. Montrose was built to serve a particular purpose but nothing is clear to say why it is the 'first' military airfield. Now IF it was stated that Montrose was the first military airfield in Scotland.. it would all make sense but I've not seen that written *-)
