These things are terrifying. I've been reading about them following the death of Andrew Simpson the other day after his (Artemis) crashed in San Francisco Bay. A lot of experts are saying that they are overpowered and that at 40kts they are on a knife edge and virtually uncontrollable. There's been talk of changing the regulations for the America's Cup to reduce the risk but it's probably too late for that now.

Obviously they are spectacular to watch but I hope none of the crew members feel under pressure to compete. The regulations require that all crew members wear body armour, helmets, oxygen and a knife in recognition of the danger. I suppose technology always pushes sport to the outer edge but I wouldn't be surprised if these things are severely emasculated after this year.

I think any notion of not being under pressure to compete is slim mate. Being chosen to crew for the America's Cup is for many, the pinnacle of their sailing life.. a huge feather in their proverbial cap that'll be 'milked' for the rest of their lives. The saying 'it's not the winning but the taking part that matters' is much overused ;)

That'd reduce the drag somewhat.
Just a bit too much like those drag trucks, powered by aero jet engines, though.
