New oil rig
There is a huge new oil rig leaving the Tyne for the Forties field but I think the Italian tug captain has gone to sleep

Re: New oil rig
Is it leaving from the Shepard yard at Wallsend? Has there been any movement down at McNultys with that super structure they built? It seem to have been there for years now. I know they are in receivership, but that looked almost complete.
Ben.

Re: New oil rig
He's seen the error of his ways. It is now outside the piers doing 5kts. Due at the Forties at 7am on Friday.
The stack at McNulty's is still there (well, it was on Sunday) but the yard is now owned by the Port of Tyne.

Ah! I didn't realise they'd bought it. Are they going to use it as a yard or flatten it and turn it into a dock?
Ben.

Re: New oil rig
Indeed they are, and they've been about for decades, although I don't know if they were always on that site. Just watched some footage of the rig on look north, very impressive!
Ben.

Re: New oil rig
An Italian tug George? Are all the British ones busy? Or maybe there aren't any left?

Re: New oil rig
Hi George,
I was down that way today to get my hair cut and the crane is being cut up, so I guess they're going to flatten it
As for the Tugs, our local ones seem to have changes recently (not that they would be used for this anyway) but the only one of the usual suspects I've seen in recent weeks is Svitzer Redbridge. We seem to have borrowed two from Middlesbrough.

Re: New oil rig
It was bad enough when they won the America's Cup, but providing tugs to Newcastle?
I may have to send back my OBE
