In preparation for the Mallard's 75th birthday A4 No. 4464 Bittern can currently be seen running at 90mph on the mainline, it's quite an imposing sight which someone has captured on camera below.

My grandparents live next to the East Coast Mainline and I loved going with grandad as a kid and watching the steam specials come thundering past.

I'm no trainspotter (honest!) but there's something about a steam loco which I find magical and thought I'd share.

I've never seen a steam loco, but I can imagine the sight of one live...sothing that will never come out properly in a clip.

I'd have expected a few people there to watch it, but there again, the lack of crowds makes for a better clip.

Magnificent Rob.There is something magical about the sight sound and smell of such a beast.I've not seen Bittern but I have been on a steam hauled trip from here to Dundee and back outbound behind the 'Sir Nigel Gresley' and return behind 'Union Of South Africa' Theline runs right along the beach through parts of Fife and the looks on the faces of children watching it was priceless. It lists all the scheduled steam tours across the UK for the year and updates them with loco changes or cancellations. If the tour has a link to 'Times' it gives you the working timetable to see what time it's due at your nearest station. It only gives the numbers of the locomotives and not the names (these are second nature to spotters!) But if you google the number it will bring up the relevant locomotive.

There is a surprising amount of mainline steam during the summer so there's no excuse not to go and see some

No. That's a feeble excuse. If you can go to Helsinki then you can go somewhere civilised with railways!
