"BEARS WITNESS TO" (7 letters) Was the crossword clue.
Obviously, the answer should have been "PICNICS"
The only word that fitted was "ATTESTS"
How stupid!

Years ago, someone I knew found that the first answer she put must be wrong as nothing using the letters fitted.
The clue was :- A yawning hole. The answer was chasm, she'd put mouth...I kid ye not
