Got this from a friend in NZ today:-

Air New Zealand have since discontinued this PAR approach into runway 05 at Queenstown.

Shame really its quite pretty. Turn the sound on.

Dear lord! :-O

What a great bit of film

He still looked a little 'hot' as the film stopped :worried:

It looked as though he could have landed on that cloud layer.

Dave...I suspect that the apparent high speed was caused by a zoom out effect with the camera set at wide angle. It probably was not going as fast as it looked...I estimate the touchdown at about 180 knots and he was still doing about 60 knots at the video cut off, but I'm sure the real speeds were considerably less

I see what you mean Peter. I only watched it in the little (default) window first time (minus sound). Watching it fullscreen.. you can see the speed is deceptively high.. almost certainly a consequence of the wide-angle. Otherwise.. he'd have been passing the threshold at around 300kts

A lovely film. Glad I watched it a second time ;)

I've flown that approach several times in FS9 and it's a doozy. A couple of years ago the Flight Sim Round The World Race featured difficult approaches and that was one of the possible airports in the shortlist. In the end it was dropped as a required airport and our team went into Kai Tak and Toncontin instead.

The trick is to lose altitude over the lake so that when you make the last turn (around a cliff) you are lined up at the correct height.

It is speeded up film, which rather spoils it. Have a look at the crossing speeds of vehicles on the road just before the 05 threshold . They are braver men than me I have to say , to do it in those conditions. I have only ever been in in VMC , and what I particularly would not relish would be to have to go-around in IMC from a point before one has reached final approach fix which is at about 6 mile final . I am not surprised that ANZ have given it up - there was a big run-in last year or the year before over an illegal "night " take off where the captain of a 737 was prosecuted over a delayed duskish departure
