It's smashing isn't it. That last sequence is just breath-taking! It makes the hair on my arms stand up just thinking about it

The beginning was rather splendid too, with all that mist. It was the Binbrook Lightning pilots that came over to Leconfield for their Sim training on the Mk 2 Lightning Simulator...Including the Station Commander, Air Commodore Millington, who always insisted on me for his instructor. This was in 1962 and 63

I was there for that show. I was lucky enough to be up from Cornwall at my Gran's house in South Yorkshire so my dad drove my brother and grandad over there for the day, I am not sure what I remember most, the noise or the driving rain! I was only 13 but what a great show!
Thanks for posting Dave! I'll send this on to my Dad and brother as we were only talking about this the other week. Wish I could share it with my Grandad he always did marvel about how crazy we were about aeroplanes.

No problem Fraser. It's not often one stumbles over something like this so it
had to be posted
Agree Peter.. it's all good. The mist (or as Fraser says.. it's probably rain!) does add something to it

The Lightning is the first 'fast jet' I ever remember seeing. I was only a wee pup in the 60's when I was taken to my first Farnborough Airshow. We were late getting there and the show had already started. As we made our way out of the car park, my uncle shouted for us to look in a certain direction and it was a Lightning coming in low on reheat. He must have been level with the centre of the crowd when he pulled up and went vertical

I was gobsmacked!!

Great display, despite the usual Binbrook rain.
Strangely enough the Chiefy and I decided that we needed to do some work in the glideslope hut around the time of the show, can't think why.............
Binbrook was one of my favourite tours, despite the end-of-an-era feeling around the base. Not only were the Lightnings heading for the scrap heap but so was everything else. The ILS system was an antique, even Locking had more up to date equipment, but despite that the atmosphere was fantastic. We all knew that we would go our separate ways at the end, but for the 3 years I was there everyone was pulling together and making things work.
Happy memories
