This is no what if as such *-) ...more a didn't happen

TWA was one of several airlines that showed interest in the Vanguard

Some, like BWIA would have bought it and really wanted to but couldn't raise the finance.

CAA was another one that was keen.

Perhaps if they'd got it out earlier instead of pacing it out the replace the Viscount arround 1960 when BEA wanted it, they could have done better.

American Airlines were keen as was the US military for a maritime version, the latter looked at CL-44 too, but this only made the case for the Electra/Orion.

TWA would have also bought a fleet of Britannias but Bristol could not build them in the required timescale.

If ready in the mid fifties along with the Britannia a little earlier, they could have made a good impact ahead of the jets.

Bristol licenced out some Brit production (just the RAF ones I think) to Shorts. A great shame they couldn't do that for TWA.

That was a sop..a condition of the RAF order which picked up rthe cancelled BOAC order for the 250

It was because the Comet 2 line in NI was dead and it gave some work up there to replace that.

The Proteus was still giving problems

Howard Hughes wanted to pay on the spot but his delivery schedule just couldn't be met.
