Time to post a preview shot of my W.I.P. Fox Moth mainly for FS9 -
Image
I've been working on this at a leisurely pace over the summer whilst being side-tracked by hols, D.I.Y. work e.t.c. There's still some work to do and it's not had its F.D.E. tuned yet.
This aircraft has a special place in my memory bank being the first I ever flew in - off Birkdale sands at Southport when the world (and I) was young. ;)
First launched by De Havilland in 1932 as a 3/4 pax seater, the aircraft was popular on feeder routes; 92 were built here in the U.K. with a further 52 made in Canada post-war.
Cheers

Hi Dave(M) :hello: ,
Looking forward to seeing this release. Truly hope it'll convert happily to FSX.
I've been flying Julian Higgs' model, coincidentally in the same paint scheme.

Looks nice dave  Just wondering, is that the same machine that Neil Oliver went up in on Coast TV show from Southport Beach recreating the early pleasure flights?

I do love southport, had some great summer hols down there too, used to stay with a close friend from uni. Happy memories. Sadly she had to move back up to Glasgow :( (We were more disappointed than her, because we lost our free holiday accommodation ;) )

Yes Gordon - that's the one :agree:
I was very surprised to see that it was/is still flying as it's been many years since my brother and I experienced our flight off the beach.
You can see the photo of us and the aircraft over on Escorts & Stewards 'All our yesterdays' page 2
We used to visit Southport occasionally because a cousin (a wavy-navy wireless officer type) lived there.
Cheers

I think I might have seen one of these flying over the house recently, with a couple of Tiger Moths for company. I did get a photo, though it's just slightly out of focus - which is why I didn't post it, but I'll dig it out now and post it tomorrow.

I had them closer at hand than I thought:

Like I said, a little blurry, but makes you feel like you're seeing them in FSX

Needless to say, I'm talking about the lead aircraft with the red markings. Might be a Gypsy or something - the only one of those era I recognise would be the Tiger.

Might be a Jackaroo up front. The others are Tigers 'cos the've got sweepback, I think Foxmoths are mods to Gipsy Moths which had no sweepback.

Just been looking at the respective 3 views & A J Jacksons book - seems the Fox moth used Tiger wings & empennage, but the 3 view shows less sweepback on the Fox Moth than the Tiger.

I could always ask around. To my amazement a few years back, I found that we had a strip down at the rugby club - which is actually known as Boston Aerodrome. It's tucked out the way and very short - but it has a hangar and a couple of small GA aircraft and people fly a lot of microlights and such there, I remember posting some shots of the Aeroprakt Foxbat coming in to land there, in fact.

Every July they have a fly in, which sometimes attracts exotic airware and I'm wondering if that's where these aircraft had been.

Tell you what - I'm sorely tempted by this:

Don't know if I can afford it, but only one way to find out :)
