Shake, rattle & roll.

Saturday early evening, we're returning from our Grandson's 7th Birthday party.
On the last leg of the journey, 20km from home, we are cruising at 100 kmh.
Suddenly, loud noise and vibration.
I pull over gently, expecting to find a punctured rear tyre, but they're all inflated.
Slid under the van and grabbed the prop shaft. Oh dear, it's quite wobbly.
Seems that the rear bearing of the gearbox has disintegrated.
Thankfully, it was all fairly level to slight downhill except for the last half km, so I nursed it along at 40 kmh with the hazard lights on.
In the morning, I'll take to it with some spanners, and we'll see what the extent of damage is.

Dear me :( Bad luck Mike. Don't forget to take a 14lb sledge hammer with you (the Persuader!) should it look too grim. It won't do the car any good but it may make you feel a whole lot better ;)

Reminds me of a failure I had with my '63 Vauxhall Victor Mk II. The Clutch bell housing was Aluminium & it cracked all the way round the attachment to the engine. Seems as if it was a known fault because the replacement was cast Iron!
Good luck
Keith

Indeed, what a stroke of good luck. Living in the middle of the desert, as Mike does, it could so easily have been another 'Lady Be Good' situation, with him found fifteen years hence, having drunk all his own urine and left with no choice but the case of Fosters in the boot. :-O

Thanks for the laughs, chaps.
Turned out to be just the UJ - one cap broke up and departed, so no gearbox out thank goodness.

BTW Joe, nobody would have noticed; the death certificate of an ex girlfriend put cause of death as "Laughing at own joke", this after telling me that she hadn't previously realised that "Mike"
was short for "microscopic". :(
