I got an email from Roy Morris in South Africa today and I thought I would share his photos:-

Image
This was the Christmas Card Photograph for 208 Squadron in 1959. The mountain peak poking up through the cloud is Kilimanjaro. I am in the Box.

Image
This is Number 1 Squadron, Rhodesian Air Force in 1970...That is their boss, Roy Morris at the head.

This is Roy in a Spifire.

Roy and I served together on both 266 Squadron in Germany and 208 Squadron in Africa.

Peter : I'm not very good on Spitfires, I'm afraid . Has that one got a peculiar engine nacelle with the cam covers poking upwards through it ?

The Spitfire is a Mk22, and is known as Malloch's Spitfire. On what was supposed to be its last flight, it crashed in mysterious circumstances.Jack Malloch was the pilot.

Thanks to Google. ;)

Further to our esteemed Mr 511's comment, the Griffon engine was the cause of those nasty bumps on the nose.

Chris...I'm not very good on them either but I know that Roy trained on Spit 22s with the Griffon engine, in the Royal Rhodesian Air Force and I thought it might be one of those. However, I thought they were all PRU Blue without Camo:-

Roy is in that picture...Shortly after training he joined the R.A.F. and eventually came to us in Germany on 266 (Rhodesia) squadron. He also served on Hunters with 20 Squadron then Venoms again on 8 squadron in Aden and then on 208 Squadron in Kenya.

Joe,

All four aircraft have numbers in the same place, but only one has them in the new colour (white). So you have answered your own question...You can't see the black ones :agree:

My aircraft for that flight was WR412 but I got that from my logbook, not the photo

Sadly, some time later, I broke WR412 which was my aeroplane on both 266 and 208 Squadrons :(

Belay that...My old Venom on both squadrons that i broke was WR419 and that one did have white numbers!
