Do you ever check your email activity?

Hi Chaps :hello:

You know these dodgy emails we all get from time to time.. the ones saying someone in a far off country wants us to manage $800.000 for them? Well.. I had this go a step further the other day. Two letters dropped on the doorstep (identical as it turned out) saying that I'd won £850k in some post code lottery or other. The lottery was run (the letter said) in Spain and funds would be released 'when I sent my fee' 8) I have no connection with Spain other than the fact my estranged sister lives there. She of course knows my email and home address so I can only imagine both have been hacked from her pc. I can't confirm this as we don't speak.. well I don't anyway!
As a precaution.. I thought I'd login to Hotmail and check my activity.. with a view to changing my password should this be necessary. I was 'mildly' surprised to find attempts to hack into my account had been made from the U.S., Poland, the Czech Republic and Argentina!! All were logged as unsuccessful.. thank goodness! In the past, I've seen attempted access from the Middle East, Australia, the Far East and the good old Soviet Union (or what's left of it). All were logged as unsuccessful.

Makes you wonder doesn't it. I've never ever been to an Argentinian website, nor one in Poland, the Czech Republic or the Middle East for that matter yet some sod has tried to access my email account from these places. Why me?? HOW me??

Stay safe out there :cpu:

Not just you Dave.
Over the past few weeks I have been getting all manner of spam emails from Spain, some from reputable companies like “Movistar” the Spanish BT.
How on earth they have got hold of my details or that they should imagine I have any “Castilian” mystifies me.
I'm not talking about the odd email either, I must have had 50 or more from all sorts.
It’ll be interesting to hear if others are blighted by the same thing.
"25€ tras tu primera compra", what the f... does that mean?
Its only my Private "Hotmail" that's affected.

I received an identical letter this week Dave. £834.000 waiting for me to claim. My postcode chosen by the Spanish lottery.

I Googled Bono Lotto, and of course it's a scam.

It's very sad when siblings fall out. My wife hasn't spoken to her brother for years. I know why, but it doesn't seem such a big deal to me.

I use an email prog called mail washer to scan mails before the come down onto my system. It does a pretty good job of clearing out the crap. Recently though, I started getting five or six emails per day offering advise on credit card dept. I dont have credit cards.
It seemed strange as the were using my full correct name which I dont use on any web sites until the penny dropped about the email addy they were sending to. The only place I had registered both was on Forces Reunited.
I deleted my profile on there, and they stopped. Peace resumes. 0:)

The beauty of Hotmail (or any other web-based email) is that you don't need to download these things. If it looks odd.. mark it as junk and next time, they end up in your spam folder. Using Outlook/Outlook Express was a different matter and a mail washer was a pre-requisite.

Dennis.. that's it.. Bono Lotto!! I have to admit it's rather disconcerting that these 'A-holes' have both my email and home address. Having one without the other kinda leaves a safety margin but having both unnerves me somewhat. :worried:

Rob.. it does seem more than coincidence that we're all suddenly getting this rubbish from Spain. Maybe our African friends now believe they've exhausted their credibility and are moving north!
I had nothing.. absolutely nothing on my Hotmail account for donkies. My old BT account attracted these emails every now and again but Hotmail.. nada. I'm not sure if it's pure coincidence (again) but I tried to register at SimSkunkWorks to buy one of their models a while back (you can't just buy stuff unfortunately) and the registration failed. I waited and waited but got no email confirmation from them so I left it at that. What DID start happening almost immediately was spam hitting my Hotmail account. How one could trigger the other is beyond me but that's what happened

Mrs Airspeed tried to sign up with Pinterest because they block display of pictures unless you are signed up.
The attempt failed, but suddenly, some of her submitted data popped up on her facebook screen.
They're ALL at it.
