Like the rest of us sane and reasonable types here, I know that air travel is safer than it's ever been. However, is it just me or has there been an increase in 'airliner' crashes over the last eighteen months or so? Or is it purely down to the media, sensationalising stories which may have previously garnered little attention? I don't want to sound insensitive, of course my thoughts are with the victims and their families, but I'd be interested to have an answer nonetheless.

According to Flight International, 2014 was the safest year on record.

Interesting, although it says the Ukraine Malaysia Airlines crash didn't count as it was 'shot down' rather than an 'accident'. It also doesn't include the ATR crash a couple of months ago. With today's accident on top of all the others, I'd hate to think that public opinion might start jumping to untrue conclusions, especially if the media start stirring. Already tonight I noticed on the Radio 4 news the learned BBC reporter gravely announcing that 'The pilot' has flown with the airline for over ten years...'The' pilot? So now A320s have a flight crew of one?
