Comments on key pub forum are pretty much spot on,as to the state of historical airframes.

Agree with much of what was said in that link. I don't think we've lost an airframe to corrosion at Brooklands but while we always suffer a shortage of volunteers.. we've somehow had enough to stave off disaster. It's very easy to see how quickly an airframe will go under if it gets past a certain point and the trouble with many museums is a lack of young blood to do the work.. this as much as needing aircraft to be covered. The expertise is there but there's no one to pass it on to and 60/70/80+ year old 'human' airframes don't mix well with ladders, scaffolding and climbing into confined spaces!!

I may be barking up the wrong tree, but years ago I think I heard that the Herald fuselage had top hat stringers that were spot welded, but not only that, but with the flanges welded to the skin, so making a closed section & not able to be inspected. Lovely water & condensation trap. Any one know better?
