Well, Schiller said it all: "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain."

Damn good thing they hit a car and suffered themselves - it could so easily have been a parent with young kids, on foot or in a stroller/pram/push-chair or whatever they are called in your airt.

The Transport Accident Commission slogan reads:
"If you drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot."

They forgot to mention shopping trolleys

and in other road news, a soon-to-retire official apparently "made a mistake" in not reporting to police following a hit and run accident.

"Yes, he had been drinking", but "was not over the limit" [by whose measurement was not made clear]
I can think of about four charges that the man in the street would face over such action.
It will be interesting to see whether there's another peep out of anyone over this.

EDIT just did a web search, but found nothing about today's radio news item.

How can one drive a shopping trolley ( known as a Chariot in France) as it has no means of control....at least the one I have come across!

You need to try a different trolley Keith. Anyway as everyone knows shopping trollies are entirely self-driving; there's bugger all you can do to control them. I blame the trolley every time.

According to my book "Trollology - the Essentials", you may technically "drive" them:

CHAPTER 16
.......429 (ii) Driving may be achieved by use of the handle, known as "RANDOM" [Rear Access Navigation Device - Orbital Meandering]...
and so it goes on

When I was a C.C.T.V. Operator, if there was a shopping trolley left in the city centre late at night it would not be long before it was utilized as a personal transport for a couple of inebriated students It has some sort of magnetic pull that attracts high spirited foolhardiness and when pushed down the precinct the end result was usually an accident of some sort with the occupant(s) spilling out across the precinct in hysterics!

Rear wheel steering is somewhat an art, but four wheel uncontrollable steering is......foolhardy & bound to end in disaster. Possibly why SWMBO takes the trolley from me - or is that because I'm too slow following her? Probably the latter as supermarkets in France are similar to their roads, i.e. double parked & chatting in the aisles as well as the roads!!!!
