Very sad - I had hoped he'd make his century. His knowledge will be impossible to replace , although quite a lot of it is recorded in his 2 volumed entitled Wings of the Weird and Wonderful ( and no doubt in his logbooks ). A very great pilot , a very brave man , and a splendid example from a generation whose exploits are very unlikely to be emulated . RIP

Very sad indeed, but what a life he led. An aviation legend in every respect. RIP.

Ooohhh, that was quick....I missed that bit of news this evening. A wealth of knowledge & bravery gone, but at least he did write & make some interviews recently.

Very sad news.
What a remarkable man. He lived through what was possibly the most exciting and challenging era of aviation development and contributed to it in no small way.
Blue skies, Eric!

High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
