We spent about an hour and a half on the Merchantman...Chatting to the chaps down the back and in the flight deck with my son-in-law, Alan as P2.

...it must have been quite a project to do this!

Stirling Moss and Fangio after the British Grand Prix of 1963?...They were first and second for Mercedes.


They were a few grams over the maximum permitted weight and Alfred Neubaur (the boss) had them take off the body paint and polish them overnight...It got them down to the exact max weight!

Along with the classic British aircraft, I like the 1930's Bentley. I have an Airfix 1/24th version (with the 'blower') sitting in a box, waiting to be built. I was also intrigued by the 'exploded' Formula 1 car. It took me a few seconds to work out what it was, but once I did, I was fascinated.
I must make a visit.

Thanks Roger and Kevin...Yes it is well worth a visit to both Mercedes World and Brooklands...We enjoyed our day there very much. From there we went on home to Dawn and Alan's home at Marham and I spent a couple of weeks there. I visited a couple of cemeterys there which had many Royal Air Force And RFC graves from both World Wars. And about 7 German ones. All were well cared for. I also enjoyed all the Tornado noise and realised that I missed jet noises!

Fantastic photographs Peter, the very first one must surelly be an Austin Seven? As it just looks like the one my father had when I was four years old and we lived in Panteg Pontypool during the early fifties I can remember that his car had arms that used to come out either side as indicators.

Would love to visit there one day.

Yes it is an Austin 7 Nigel...My Son used to have a small business buying, restoring and selling them...He once drove one on a circuit of UK!

A relative of ours used to come to Leeds (as far back as I can remember) each year to collect my grandad and I and take us to stay at Billingham. Seemed to always take for ever on pre motorway roads.

I was 17yrs in 1957 my first car was a Austin 10 i bought for £5, i had three of them and a Big 7 as it was called by the time i was 19, the thing wrong with them and the 7 was stopping them!!!!.

The cable brakes would stretch so you had a V plate with a screw on it that you could wind in to tighten the cable, it is hard to believe now but i could go to a breakers field [yes not a yard] and there were dozens of Austins of all sorts you could get spares for,

I just think sometimes if only i had collected some but there were so many about i suppose you did'nt think that someday they would be worth money!!!

I live about a mile as the crow flies from Brooklands. 15 mins to drive there. 5 years ago, I visited there with an old RAF pal who now lives in Australia, on duty at the Merchantman was our own DaveB. We were given the grand tour, and spent some time on the flight deck. A very enjoyable day.

Mercedes World is right next door, and you can just walk in to look around. We visited with our 9 year old grandson who wanted to sit in the cars. A sales rep' told us that if the doors were unlocked, we could sit in any car we wished to. It took us hours to get around, and he must have sat in all of the cars. There are an awful lot of them.

Some big day out!

My little story about the Austin 7 is that Dad bought one. It must have been 1949.
The registration plate was PJ 3728.
Dad was Peter Johnson, Mum was Pat.
I was 3.
My big brother was 7.
Mum & Dad were both 28.

Pure coincidence, but an early example of personalised plates!

When he eventually sold it, he got a five pound note; it was white, and about the size of a blooming bed sheet!
I remember them bringing it into our bedroom and holding it up.
