I can see why he would though. I used to fly the '10 gloveless most of the time (once the flaps were up and autopilot was in, almost everybody did, but I didn't really like wearing them at all), partly as I found it gave me better dexterity to operate some controls, particularly on the centre console. It could be this chap likes a gloved hand on the yoke but an un-gloved hand to do everything else in the middle.

My first thought, was 'I wonder if he did that on his check flights' and if so what did his examiners think of his confidence?
Then, I realised it was in Columbia, a very Catholic nation. As such, the procedure is probably part of the pre-take off checklist. If you look closely, the First Officer does the same procedure at the same time (not knocking Catholics - I'm one myself!).

Kevin : well spotted, I hadn't noticed that . That is interesting - I suppose that this may have been a crew who flew together a lot , given that it is a cargo outfit

I've only ever used gloves in a cockpit when I was instructing on cold winter days and we went on longer flights. I would be the one in the righthand seat trying to keep from freezing to death in a barely heated Cessna, the students were still sweating...

As I said previously, Columbia (along with much of Central and South America) is deeply religious. Perhaps the 'Sign of the Cross' is more common and ingrained into their society than we are used to.
