Damn you, BBC radio. In all my time on earth, I've studiously avoided listening to The Archers; a dreary, utterly uninteresting radio drama centred around dreary, uninteresting English rural life, that's been broadcast, uninterrupted, for the last thousand years on BBC 4.

Today I switched on the radio in the car and found I was listening to a radio play in which a jury was considering their verdict. ( Attn. Colonials - think of the fine film '12 Angry Men' but set in a British court, adapted for radio, and about a tenth as interesting ). I kept it on till almost the end, when I realized it was an extended episode of The Archers, in which some woman had attempted to murder some man and had been found not guilty. The only compensation is that at least I had covered about 45 miles of the distance between Cambridge and Norwich, so it hadn't been a complete waste of time.

We used to listen to it in the 1950s.
In those days there was no BBC4, or any other number.
We just had BBC or Radio Luxemberg, and I think "Voice of America" was on SW or something.
(....and we lived in a rolled up newspaper in the gutter, and had to eat our fingers if we got hungry....... )

Just be thankful you weren't around a thousand years ago (like Mike) because you would've had to make the trip by horse!

Which would've made the trip doubly dreary.. and slower.

Ah Mike, we did have the choice between Home Service and the Light Programme from auntie on the wireless. I remember The Archers and Mrs. Dales's Diary that my mother listened to and woe betide me if I made a sound during those. Can't recall the food situation being as desperate as you describe but I do remember rationing.
