We used to celebrate our victory and remember the fallen on this day, 15th September. I think that RAFA used to have a "Wings Appeal" but I have not heard of this collection for some years.

I remember collecting for the 'Wings Appeal' when I was a teenager in the ATC way back in the early 70's.

A lot of brave young pilots gave their lives for us not to mention all those who battled on through regardless of the risks such as the Merchant Seamen Royal Navy and army personal as well as civilians.
Though can't help wondering how many of those who lost their lives flying Hurricans and Spitfires did so through outdated practices i.e. close formation flying, as the pilots who flew during the Battle of Britain later complained about close formation tactics instead of using the finger four that the Germans used. A good number of these pilots had written in their autobiographies (of which I have read many such as John Kent, David Crook, Tom Neil and too many others to mention) that close formation flying was only good for such events as the Hendon Air Display but not for battle as the pilots flying as say Red one and two spent more of their time maintaining formation on their leader rather than looking out for the enemy and as such were often shot down without having seen who hit them. There was of course at times a weaver, but if his radio packed up or was hit before being able to shout a warning then of course the rest of the flight was in trouble! Sadly it was only later that Squadrons adapted to better formations when flying on tactical missions against the enemy over France.

Nigel.
