A lovely programme . I thought the driver , whose name is Roger Norfolk and who has an interesting history having started life as a schoolteacher for many years, was most impressive . I have always thought these large locomotives were just about the most complicated things to operate that man has ever invented - even the last of the big piston engined airliners were rather more straightforward

I was totally immersed by the programme, one thing I did not realise was that I always thought that the fireman just shovels in the coal but no.........it is done 'technically' as the only way I can describe it.

A really brilliant piece of documentary, now all we need is for Eddie to appear at some point and show us all how it's done up front with a new engine!!

Regards
Nigel.

A delightful and informative program. I wish they would make more programs like that. As for the Severn Valley, it is an extremely beautiful part of England.
My Dad often used to take me over to the Severn Valley Railway when I was a kid. I last went about 3 years ago, not long after my Dad passed away. You can imagine the memories that brought back.
I love the engineering of those old steam locos. Also, they seem so majestic in motion.

Just watched this beautiful programme. How nice it was to have no music and no gesticulating presenter who thinks that they are more important than the subject matter. A lovely part of the country as well. The last time I saw the Severn Valley railway was in 2006 while looking out of the window of a DH Rapide on a flight from Wolverhampton! What a wonderful experience it was. :) EricT

Totally agree. Similar to the weird camera effects that we have to put up with, because the camera operator wants to win an award.

It's beautiful from the train window on a wonderful spring day. From the air at low level, it must be awesome.

Then, there is always the Severn Valley Railway's surprise. Look out for some totally unexpected animals ;) !
