I had one for a while (I may still have it in fact) from a mate who'd taken his PPL then let it lapse Great for working out all those things your brain isn't capable of doing but you need to know how they work first

Ahh, the old "whiz wheel". Cool! Always thought it'd be neat to learn how to use one...and also use a sextant...and play the harmonica...and learn to juggle. *sigh* Have fun with the "whiz wheel", Graham!

Very nearly freaked out when I went to see what it looked like and saw all the variables to use on it, it would take someone with a lot of patience for my brain to get the hang of it!!

Think will just stick to drawing a line on the flight planner and follow it!!

Hello,
I used to teach how to use it to my cadets when we did Pilot Nav. They couldn't get their head around the fact it was a computer and I could work things out faster than them on their phones!

The bit I liked about the old whiz wheel was putting a pencil blob on that graph thing and then trying to work out drift angles, which IIRC you had to average out by moving the dial this way and that . It was very easy to get the drift the wrong way if you didn't keep your wits about you which could make life exciting particularly if there were no other aids/visual cues available

The other sobering feature about it was working out density altitude, which was not often necessary but there were one or two places in Europe where it was material in Summer , Madrid being one of them

Still using my 1972 ' whizz wheel ' to teach nav to PPL studes . Had to revise using it myself before teaching it !

Only got partly trained in juggling on Shetland winter night stops , so I really am a one trick pony .
