Never heard of James Stile? Me neither...until I saw this photo the other day.

Intrigued by James' tombstone I did a quick Google and found this.

Here's a photo of the Gold Hill, Nevada (far away from his native Devon) that would've been very familiar to James.

Rest in peace James Stile.

Indeed. :( A story for me that has more questions than answers. Did James arrive in San Francisco from England? That would make for the shortest trip to Gold Hill. Was he mining for a company or was he searching for gold on his own? Did he find much gold? If so did he send money back home to his folks in Devon, or did he blow it all on wine women and song in Gold Hill? So many questions I'd like to ask James. It's funny how one little picture can send you off on a hunt for more information. :)

I looked briefly at the links when you first posted Brian and was left wondering all the things you've just mentioned. James Stile was from Devon and apparently had something to do with gold mining but other than that.. who the hell was he :dunno: Equally.. why the hell did you post an RIP for some old Brit that died a million years ago?

Now.. if President Roosevelt or maybe Neil Armstrong was really James Stile from Devon living under an alias.. that would be noteworthy

What say you readers?

  Actually the heat isn't too bad. 96F with 41% humidity gives us a heat index (ya'll remember "heat index"? ) of 102F. I merely found it interesting that a young man living in Devon would travel all the way to Nevada. :-O Must've seemed like travelling to the moon, to him. (There's your Neil Armstrong reference). I don't think I would have done it, but then again we must remember “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. (There's your President Roosevelt reference). Any way, my next historical post..."George Formby: The Forgotten Years". :hide:

Well Brian, I found your post very interesting. Thanks for those links. Looking forward to you next one on Formby ;) since, when I was around four or so, one of my favourite records was him singing "The Blue Eyed Blonde Next Door" on a 78rpm given to me along with a clockwork gramophone by a great aunt. I still have that record and the gramophone.
