I haven't returned it to the tip yet, because the TV mode picture was quite sharp.
I can't understand how the DVI input should be less so.

It may be that your computer simply can't identify the monitor type so it does not know what resolutions it can set it too. Try hunting down a monitor driver for device. Try here first:
