Re: Anyone using VR headset with success ?
I will soon be in the same position Rick, after having read users experiences with different types of VR Headsets I am still no better off knowing which to go for.
When you finally do get one pleased let us know.

Nigel.

Yes and no. I've used VR successfully in AFS2 and also XPlane but not yet P3D. Also pretty good with VR specific software via Oculus. If you can wait until the first weekend in Jan Rick you can borrow mine for 3 weeks.

I've got a Rift as well. I find it pretty good, but it does take a bit of getting used to. Needs a beefy pc too, especially with p3d. It's great for simple vfr type flying in a light aircraft or warbird, but complex aircraft can be awkward.

Yes.
Oculus RIFT.
I am using it in P3D, DCS and X-Plane 11 without any problem and probably do about 50% of flights in VR.
P3D V 4.4 has now improved the native interface so there is less reliance on 3rd party software and DCS and X-Plane work well with native interfaces too.
The image isn't as sharp an you would expect from a monitor but at 1024 has sufficient definition to read instruments without any problem.
I usually wear varifocals but manage quite adequately without them when using the headset.
There are corrective lenses available if needed.
As Dave G says RIFT does take a bit of grunt but I used it to good effect with the Nvidia 970 and a generation 3 i7. I'm now using an i7 7700k and Nvidia 1080 and am very pleased with the results.
I have tried RIFT and VIVE and found RIFT to be the better of the two.
Hope this is helpful.

The reason it's called the "Rift" is because that's what your hair is like after using one!

What hair?

The immersion factor in AFS2 has to be seen to be believed. It's quite astonishing to look down over the side of the cockpit in the F18 at the ground whizzing past below. Also can induce nausea if flying a bit too enthusiastically.
Rick - first Saturday in Jan okay? We can sort out a handover via PM. I'm off on a cycling tour of Sri Lanka so won't be using it for 4 weeks.
