I've only ever been to one GP, and Stirling won that one in a Vanwall. It was at Aintree in 1957. His car actually broke down, and he took over his team mate Tony Brooks car. It was allowed back then.
I was station at RAF Kirkham, not far up the road, and I went with several of my mates. Happy memories.

I saw an interview with Sir Stirling Moss not so long ago, in which he recalled a young boy cracking the joke:
Q. What comes out of a wardrobe at 100mph ?
A. Stirling Moth
He was very amused, but rather surprised that after all these years, his name was still synonymous with speed, even to this young lad.

RIP Stirling Moss . I always thought his greatest drive of all was to win the Mille Miglia in the 300 SLR with Jenks as the "riding mechanic"/ navigator
