Turnhouse 1971

Came across this excellent footage, with sound, of a dreary late morning at Edinburgh’s Turnhouse Airport in 1971. Didn’t think I’d see or hear a Vanguard belting down the old 13 runway again. Superb, hadn’t seen that since at least 1974. They routinely landed on 31 and took off on 13. The Cambrian Viscount was on its way to Belfast, then on to the Isle of Man and Liverpool, timed for departure at 11:30.

Fraser, I take it that's around the time they were laying the new runway? I'm struggling to work out the position of the "gates" where the Viscount and Vanguard left from relative to what I'm guessing is RW12/30 (before it got buldozed the other year.)

Yes, it’s what was turned into the cargo apron. They started parking nose in about 1971, prior to that they self manoeuvred with the aid of a marshaller. Think the new runway was started around 1975, and opened before the new terminal in 1977. I have a brick from that old terminal somewhere which I lifted when it was demolished.

I’m sure I found footage on the Nls site of aircraft landing at East Fortune when the runway was closed at Turnhouse too, but can’t seem to find it now.

Thanks for those historic films, Gentlemen
The lift offs look quite sedate, compared to today's seemingly angular departure from the runway.

Particularly liked this one.
Some of it from Renfrew, some from Abbotsinch.
I worked in Air Traffic Control at Abbotsinch for twenty two years.
