Lockheed Super Constellation

Post by Kevin Farnell »

Now that Mike has released the answer to the CBFS Spotter constellation quiz, I thought I'd re-upload some of my photos that I took at Duxford in 2014 (the originals were linked from my now defunct Virgin webspace).

A beautiful aeroplane, which when I'd only seen it from pictures, I thought looked ungainly. seeing it in reality and flying totally changed my opnion.

Note - when photographing propeller aeroplanes, I set the shutter speed to 1/320th of a second in order to get some 'prop blur', while hopefully the rest of the image remains sharp. I've tried slower shutter speeds, but ended up with far more blurred images.

Stratospheric traces, of our transitory flight.
Trails of condensation, held in narrow paths of white...

Beautiful pictures, Kevin. She certainly is a graceful aircraft. I saw her at Duxford many years ago, at a Flying Legends airshow I think, and I was amazed at the amount of oil stains around her engines. There were drip trays everywhere.

Hi Paul

These were taken at Flying Legends 2014, so quite possibly the same airshow that you were at. I got a shot of the engines at start-up, but can't see the oil stains for smoke -

Also, another couple of photos of her on the ground

I totally agree that it is a beautiful aeroplane and was in awe when I saw it for real.

Superb pics Kevin. Surely one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. EricT

One of the best 3-engined prop liners ever built, along with the B377!

It used to be said that both the Connie and the B377 were range limited not by how much fuel they could carry but by how much engine oil they could carry! :-O

Kevin, thinking back, I believe it might have been earlier than 2014. I'm trying to find some pictures of my own, but they filed away somewhere. Great aircraft to see of course. Thanks for posting your pics.

Great photos, you two ;)
I have a couple of overall shots of "Connie" VH-EAG", but here's a couple, of the smoke generators.
Very squeaky brakes on them, too, btw.
