There is a massive arctic front moving down over the US.
Water sometimes becomes super chilled in pipes and this happens.

Fortunately, my younger daughter and her family are over here for Christmas. Their house in Michigan is probably buried at the moment. Best of luck to our CBFS Colonials - you certainly have Weather over there.

We are currently sitting at -15°C (5°F) with a wind chill (feels like temperature) of -29°C (-20°F) and we are not likely to see temperatures above freezing until December 28th. Our night-time temperatures have been getting down to -20°C (-4°F) without the windchill factor and we have had gale force winds and blizzards for 3 days straight and the winds are not supposed to drop much until the New Year! We lost power for 3 hours yesterday evening but thankfully our house is well insulated and we only lost 4°F in room temperature during the time our heating was off. We have a gas boiler that heats water for the central heating system that then feeds baseboard heaters in all rooms but the pump to pump the hot water around the system is obviously electrically powered so with no power we can't run the heat despite the boiler being able to get hot!

We have been lucky on the snow front as the swirling winds have kept our lawn and our half of our shared driveway pretty much clear of snow and we have maybe half an inch of snow (12mm) but our neighbours have drifts over 4ft high behind all their cars due to the way the snow was swirling around in the vortex created by the buildings!

Our city authorities declared a State of Emergency last night as the road conditions became so bad due to drifting and blowing snow and people getting stuck and abandoning the vehicles where they were. Emergency crews we getting stuck, snow plows were pulled off the road and people were told to shelter in place, wherever they were! The local Walmarts had to lock people in as all the roads around it were declared impassible and the in-store MacDonalds was providing free food and warm drinks while the Walmarts staff were setting up TVs for people to watch and charging stations for cell phones as well as providing blankets for people to stay warm. Local farmers were going around back roads in their neighbourhoods in their large tractors with buckets on the front and were rescuing stranded drivers and pulling vehicles out of ditches and then putting them up for the night in their farmhouses. The State of Emergency is still in place today as the road crews try and get the roads plowed and people are being told to stay home unless they have an emergency.

Winter in Canada, gotta love it! :worried:
