Duxford Mystery Plane Exhibit

I've dropped into Duxford for more years than most recent hangars have been up. (You'd think the Yanks would tidy up the one we put up for them - it's about as crowded and chaotic as my spare bedroom)

Anyway they have an exhibit running for the next couple of months that has to be worth a visit. All about an Unsung Hero of WWII. Someone dusted off a spare Albemarle or Whitley?

No something called a Hurricane. For crying out loud.

Who titles their exhibits? Maybe next year it will be the supersonic civil transport you've never heard of?

There are one or two in New Zealand, but none here in Australia

My grandsons are visiting, so I took them to Duxford just before Christmas. The exhibition was being made ready.

There is another one, a Mk.II in Hangar 4, so there could have been seven together if they'd wanted.

I still do learn something every day; for the past 66 years, I only knew the MkII as a 4 x 20mm cannon version.
I knew that there was a 12 x .303 version, but didn't register that this was the early MkII.
Slightly embarrassed, but happy to have acquired this knowledge

Probably one of the best mannequins I've ever seen in a display, too; even the hand has good detail

Yes, a Mk.IIB. According to the IWM, it was one of the ones we sent to the USSR, and was recovered from there. I think I might go back down to Duxford and have a closer look at this exhibition. According to various blurbs, there are now seven airworthy ones together ( so, eight on site in total ).

Hi Paul,
If you do go back, I'd be very interested in detailed photos of the starboard side cockpit area.
I have several pics of the port side, showing the stencilling about the oxygen tank, and the knock-out clearview window panel is also that side.
Seeing as pilots entered from the left, a left-over from the army mounting their horses this side, it makes sense to have that warning located there.
I'm assuming that as the starboard is the emergency exit, with droppable door, there is no stencilling on that side, but confirmation would be nice.
