Interesting Airline Rescue Operation By Eastern Tristar

Post by Aharon »

Shalom and greetings all my pals,

Allow me to present you an interesting aviation history on how Eastern airline's plane came to rescue for the island of Jersey near England. The island was hit twice by extremely bad fog that forced the EGJJ Jersey airport to shut down twice which resulted into thousands of Heathrow bound passengers stranding in the airport or on the island and same numbers of Jersey bound passengers stranded in Heathrow.

British Airways decided to come rescue to solve the massive backlog of stranded passengers by selecting two Lockheed L1011s to clear out backlog. Two out of many L1011s in the British Airways fleet got the assignments. The British Airways registration numbers are N323EA and G-BBAF meaning that if you notice the first registration number, you would realize it is Eastern Airlines plane on lease to British Airways!!!

Presenting rescue mission flight from EGLL Heathrow Airport located 14 miles west of center of London to EGJJ Jersey Airport located 4.6 miles west northwest of Saint Helier in island of Jersey which is part of Channel Islands.

100 stranded Jersey island bound passengers boarding the plane at Heathrow. British Airways was not allowed to load more than 100 passengers into their L1011 with 300 passenger capacity due to strict weight restrictions concerning landings on EGJJ Jersey airport

Nice shots Aharon.
I remember that well, as I was one of those stuck on Jersey at the time! I remember we spent the night in a nearby village hall. Unfortunately, we didn't get flown out on the Tristar, we came back on a BAC 1-11 (series 500, or 510 I think).

Great shots Aharon, and a great follow up with newspaper reports.

I flew the HS 146 from Heathrow in MS2020 to Jersey knowing that the runway is not as long as I would have liked I aimed for a low approach, touched down and applied max brakes, the 146 has no reverse thrust, I only just managed to slow down enough before being able to turn off the runway!! Tried it again a few days later and ended up overshooting on landing!! You did well in getting the Tristar down safely.

Regards
Nigel.

Aharon , thank you for this . Remember the story in '' The Friday Firelighter '' [ BA weekly newspaper ].
Girlfriend at the time was Cabin Crew No 8 flight [ flew Tristars ] . N323EA was reputed to have 'The Ghost of Flt 401' on board ..
Mostly seen in the under floor galley late at night ! The story was that galley equipment from N310EA , Eastern Airlines flt 401 which crashed in Florida Everglades ; had been salvaged and was on N323EA when leased to us ......
Flew AF much later in '96-'98 . Nearly 25 yrs old by then and upgraded to a -100 from a -1. Engines 'thrust bumped' and weights upped .
Colour schemes had gone to BA Airtours and then Caledonian , further to AerLingus when we did 2 years [ April-October ] lease to them .
From 300 pax. upped to 393 , plus 1 tonne of spares in the hold . Could go 6 hrs stop for a 'gas 'n go . Then another 6 hrs to a warm beach somewhere ...
'Tho out of Luton on a hot summer's night had to wait for temp to drop 3 degrees to get away to Cyprus with minimum reserve fuel .

Rgds d farrow .
