REFLECTOR GUNSIGHT

Post by Airspeed »

I would never have believed it.
This is the first time I have ever seen one of these on ebay, and I fully expected bidding to be fierce.
I estimated that it would go for $1,000 easily, quite beyond my budget.
However, I threw in my best offer with 20 seconds to go, and won for just over half my bid.
I actually get to be custodian of one for the coming period :excited:

OK, I have to say that although I'm happy with what I got, it is more incomplete than I thought :$
It was described as "May be incomplete" but I have criticised the seller for his vague description.
Missing the lamp holder and bracket for the reflector glass itself. (reflector glass top right of picture)
Strangely another 2 have popped up on ebay, one also missing the lamp holder, for US$2,500, and the other from Canada which does appear more complete, for a few hundred $ more, so as I say, I shouldn't feel too bad.
See below for what I got, which is actually worth what I paid:

Other recent purchases, which I'm totally happy with are:
HAND HELD TYPE O 6 COMPASS, with prism and originally internally lit, but will have to be modded to run on currently available batteries:

LOW LEVEL BOMBSIGHT COMPUTOR Mk III.
I obtained details of the 4 charts on the original printed roll, from the Australian War Museum.
I reproduced these on the desktop and fitted them to the wooden roller inside.
The airspeed indicator moved perfectly on arrival, and the roller now rotates easily after a bit of TLC.
There are 2 charts for M.P.H, and 2 more for Knots-identified with large red "K"s
The AWM has a training film on line, showing how the bomb aimer used the sight which was fed adjustments by cable from the computor.
It was really quite clever, mainly used 300ft or less, for dropping depth charges (DC's on the charts) on naval targets.

This is definitely a complete one, around $AU4,500 with postage

Er-hum, I could also mention that it's soon Fathers' Day in Oz :hide:
