Well Leif.. the C1K sim was real enough for me. Tonks flying.. me watching in P2 posn, DM in the jump seat, Tonks 'real' P2 sitting in the Navs posn and a flteng sitting at his desk. Unfortunately, none of the ships I visited Honk Kong on used that approach mate!!

Old sailors never die.. they just smell that way!
Er..well yes Jetty, that was mainly the reason why I wrote Oops ;-)
Yes It's all freeware, and yes Jim Vile has specialized in making awkward approaches. Go to AVSIM and do a search on Jim Vile and you will see what I mean. He has also done a magnificent work in describing what he does. (in the Readme's). You might say he is an ILS/AI specialist.

I have a video sequence of an AI plane doing exactly this ;-)Keith Jones wrote:Will the AI fly the checkerboard approach?
Unfortunately I'm not able to load it up anywhere, And I might add, I don't think it's worthy an upload. It was meant as a small tease of what to expect.
You can see more of it here:

You buggers have dragged me out good and proper, now. I've reloaded FS but am under severely restricted flying duties (but including Golf Mike and HKG).
The scenery looks very detailed, Dan, but isn't quite realistic enough for me. According to my famous log book, I've flown into Kai Tak 55 times (5 on the jump seat). Sorry for being a smartarse.
What particularly leaps out at me about checkerboard hill is that there is NO CHECKERBOARD on it! There are apartment blocks  . No wonder you missed the runway! Purely for comparison, here's a similar screenshot using the payware (sorry!), but pretty realistic, Hong Kong 2004.

Dan - pleased to hear that they haven't forgotten the checkerboard! And airboatr - thanks for the compliment, but the more eagle-eyed out there will see that I was really stationary. Just posing for the picture. I'm not that good, but perhaps a wee bit better than Dan!
In case anybody hasn't got the charts for the runway 13 approach, here are the IGS and the stonecutters charts. I wouldn't suggest using the stonecutters in a VC10 until I've had time to leave the airport building!

Thanks for those Ian. as a matter of fact Jim Vile has included maps in his package as well, and also the ability to include his RWY13 AI traffic approaches for other 3rd party sceneries.
With all due respect for the payware version of Kai Tak, I still stick to the freeware, but each to his own I suspect ;-)
And I think you might be a little more than a wee better than me, as I never actually flown an aircraft myself....and I wasn't fortune enough to try to land in Kai Tak as a passenger either... but that doesn't calm down my fascination of this magnificent airport and its special approach.
