Operation Lancaster

Post by hobby »

'The Aeroplane' for July 2006, just on sale in the UK, carries an article describing the route taken by 16 Lancasters of 35 Sqdn RAF (Sqdn code TL+acft letter) plus 1 Avro York support aircraft which flew on a victory tour of the USA July 8th - August 29th 1946.

One Lancaster (TW870/TL-R) was later written off after hitting a bystander at Gander on the return leg.

Some brave soul might like to fly the 11,800nm route in say a Canberra or Vulcan which cruising to make 420kts ground speed would take about 28 hrs flying time. You could use simspeed X 2 to shorten the actual time taken. Estimated longest leg would take about 3 actual hours. Shortest leg 15 actual minutes!

I have tried to follow the 1946 route but AFBs vanish and or are renamed so the route, starting from St Mawgan, could be:

EGDC/LPLA/CYYT/KBOS/KLGA/KSTL/KMCI/KDEN/KLAX/KSKF/KDCA/
KADW/KCEF/KLGA/KBOS/CYYT/LPLA/EGDG

or St Mawgan/LajesAFB(Azores)/St John's (Newfoundland)/NY La Guardia via Boston Logan, overfly Boston, land La Guardia/St Louis by overflying Buffalo and Chicago O'Hare; land St Louis/ Land Denver overfly Kansas City/Los Angeles Int/ San Antonio Texas/Washington/Andrews AFB/Westover Ma/NY La Guardia/St John's (NFnlnd) via overfly Boston/ Lajes AFB (Azores)/ St Mawgan.

In between the world cup matches perhaps?
