What Happens When An HPT Lets Go (56k Wng)

Post by VC10 »

1230 PM, Friday, June 2, 2006 at LAX.

American Airlines Boeing 767 doing a high power engine run had a #1 engine HPT failure. HPT let go and punctured left wing, #2 engine, peppered fuselage and set fire to the aircraft. The turbine disk exited the engine and sliced through the aircraft belly and lodged in the outboard side of the #2 engine

That last picture says it all.... ouch :worried:

Whats the future for this? Is it repairable? Uneconomical to repair or no choice but beer cans and saucepans for this one now?

I was thinking the same thing Dyl, now we all graphically understand about the UAL DC10 at Sioux City

That would really ruin your day

If it had happened at FL350 there would have just been damage to #1 eng and possibly some damage on the ground.
