Cautionary tale....

Hi Folks

Early yesterday morning I decided to update some drivers....

As I clicked to download a little window momentarily popped up to say 'file not found'..but something was downloading...moments later everything went pear shaped..when I clicked on Explorer or Firefox the mouse curser constantly flickered and opened multiple windows, nearly a hundred of each, minimised windows cascaded across the screen...

..then a 'preparing to standby' window came up and my machine closed down....fearing the worst I re-booted: after a quick look I discovered that my FS partition had decided to become a wireless network drive..some files had appeared..which made no sense at all.

I ran all the antivirus checks but nothing was found..meanwhile if I attempted to open anything the same flickering icon, the same multiple windows and close down...then on re-boot in safe mode I got a 'your system has changed, Windows needs to be re-activated' message..

A few hours of panic..checking everything I could think of, not knowing if the machine would start on the next re-boot..planning how to get important files off with an unstable system..using our 'steam-driven' machine to trawl the web for clues..meanwhile a contant run of power-downs and multiple windows.....

Then I looked down..no viruses, no dodgy system..I found the problem..

..the Enter key on my keyboard was stuck down.....

Half a day of stress for something as simple as that...

Moral of the story: don't let computers rule your life..and the solution is right in front of you...

..doesn't stop me feeling like a total prat though..

Derek, when I went on an IT course (in the days of DOS) I was always reminded by the tutor that if something goes wrong with the computer then it usually is the operator or something very simple and stupid.........believe me........when something does goes wrong.......I always blame the computer..............makes me feel a whole lot better even though it was probably me!!! :tuttut:

I once called the tech guys at work because my mouse would not respond.

Try as I might re-boot.......nothing :k:

The soloution was simple

The machine next to me was last used by a left handed person.

My mouse had somehow gone behind  .....I was trying to use the mouse from the adjacent machine
