BOAC/QANTAS flights...

Post by JasonK »

I have a Timetable from QANTAS 1956...on the European flights, it is split between BOAC and QANTAS..My question is: What plane would BOAC have used?

Thanks in advance.
If I had anything witty or profound to say, it would be here....

I was very tempted to say COMET 4 until I saw that 1956 date. QANTAS leased COMET 4's from BOAC for a short time during when first 6 B707-138's were upgraded from turbojet to fanjet power, and the British COA modidication applied to these aircraft .... but that wasn't until the early 1960's though.

If your timetable is for 1956 .... and only if a QANTAS aircraft was used .... then it might have been the SUPER CONSTELLATION operating those European services.

Of course that's just a guess on my part

In those days it could have been a number of things but would most likely be a Canadair Four in the European area. That would also be the type they had most of at that time. Constellation are another possibility.

From the June 1955 OAG:
The Kangaroo Route

Qantas example:
FL: EM 531Super-Constellation Monday Only.
Sydney 21:30
Darwin: 04:40-07:10
Djakarta: 11:50-13:05
Singapore: 15:25-07:30
Bangkok: 10:35-11:45
Calcutta: 14:30-15:45
Karachi: 20:50-22:35
Beirut: 03:45-04:45
Rome: 09:30-11:30
Frankfurt: 14:25-15:25
London: 17:35

BOAC example:
FL BA 705 Constellation Sun, Thurs, Fri
Sydney: 21:30
Darwin: 05:00-07:15
Djakarta: 12:00-13:00
Singapore: 15:30-08:30
Calcutta: 13:50-14:50
Karachi: 20:00-22:00
Beirut: 03:20-04:30
Zurich: 11:15-12:15
London: 14:55

Did you notice that both flights took the night off in Singapore ? I wonder where the guests would stay ? May be in the grandiose Raffles Hotel ...

Qantas in 1955 were flying their DC-4 in the Far Eastern route, and Constellations (749 ?) in the Indian Ocean routes to Jo'burg via Mauritius. They flew the L-1049 also from Sydney to Vancouver, with a possible connection to Auckland via Nandi with TEAL DC-6. As far as BOAC Argonauts are concerned they were flying in June 1955 the Middle East routes, the West African routes, and were sharing the East and South African routes with the constellation. Indeed they were also flying to the Far East, but no farther than Singapore or Tokyo, again sharing the long duty with the constellations. Although the HP Hermes is listed in the abbreviations, I don't find it at all in the flights listed in June 1955. May be it had just been removed from the lines.

As our legendary Tom Gibson would write, "hope this helps..."
