Well thats' another two I've worked on crossed off the list (XV501 and XV408), mind you,501 didn't have the fin cap back in Spring '81 when this photo was taken, 501 on the left, XV420 on the right.
And here's the full version
which is too big for the forum (which is why I haven't 'tagged' it)

and I'm in there somewhere

Here's another taken at same location (not by me), although I was probably there when this was taken
flying
between the hangars (St Athan, 76 hangar behind the jet, where we did the Phantom overhauls, and 78 hangar to the right which was Vulcan overhauls) you can see in my big photo.
Sqn Ldr Guy Pearce is in the driving seat

Hi Ben,
Like the paints, though I don't think it suits the blue, only my opinion
I too have worked on all of them at one time or another.
Notable XV408 'N' which was on 23 Sqn Wattisham at the time.

Nice paints there Ben, but my guess is that not a lot of people know which sqn XV501 was on at the time of that scheme.

it was on 23 sqn and not 1435 flt lol, god knows why it has dual insignias.

Great work phantom_fgr2!
Must say Pete, got to love that Phantom shot of Guy Pearce flying between those hangers - I just wonder if the RAF would approve nowadays

That's because it
was a 23 Sqn bird, Ben......I'll explain.....
Originally, Falklands air defence was provided by 23 Sqn, when it deployed en-masse to Port Stanley from Coningsby after the war;
(This left a gap in UK air defences which was 'plugged' by the arrival of the F4-J(UK) or F3 as its sometimes known, and 74 Sqn.)
To mark their 'new' territory 23 painted the flag on the nose of all their aeroplanes, along with the historical 23Sqn red and blue 'bars'
http://www.raf.mod.uk/squadrons/h_image ... dogiia.gif
( The insignia on the nose was lifted directly from the Falkland Islands national flag.

1435 Flt only came along later when aircraft strength was reduced below that deemed suitable for Squadron status.
Hope this helps
