Hi guys

I'm not really here..speaking to you from another computer

I started up the propr on this morning to be greeted by a series of pips

When the screen came up it had the errror

Chip fan fail or speed too low

Is this an easy fix?

So many fans in a PC, question is which one?

CPU, graphics card or one of the logic chips.

You might want to wait for CB's opinion, but you could open the case and make sure the fans are connected (although why one should come unconnected I don't know). Also make sure the fans actually move and are not seized.

Hi Ian

Seeing they move would be a good start,

Hopefully CB will be arround, but in the meantime..thanks

Funny thing is it gives an option to cancel the error almost as if it is possibly a false error! :dunno:

Well at least it starts so you can see if the fans are going round. Although I would just turn them manually to see if any are stuck before turning on again.

One other thought.

In the BIOS it may be possible to set a minimum speed for the CPU fan. Obviously if this has got changed somehow (ghosts?) to a speed higher than possible it could give this error.

Hi Ian the alternate to ignore is to go the the bios but I wouldn't know what the settings should be and don't want to risk the machine

On this back up machine I am using now it often gives an overclocking error on startup but that is a false error and the card is not and never has been overclocked. In fact it has another card now and it still thinks that.

The main machine has never given the overclocking error

That's is why I wondered about false errors.

I will take a look a little later..like after tea

Thanks again

Yes on a couple of my motherboards there was an incessant beeping on starting. Checking the various comments on the web it means that the CPU fan is not working - but it is. And on rebooting the beeping goes away.

Fasle alarm methinks. Almost as though the sensor is checking before the fan is up to speed.

But this happened from new, not a sudden occurrence. And the solution was simple, disconnect the internal speaker.

not one of these is it? "chip fan" is suggested to be Northbidge fan - the small one near the large .CPU fan

OK Ian

Sort of understand......maybe :k:  :worried:

The machine is under warentee and it's about seven months old

I am reluctant to take it in unless I have to mainly because they always try to claim it is somethi8ng else not covered.

Also they do not book in...it's first come first served so it could sit there for a week waiting for a fifve minuet job

So if it is something I can do

Here's what I do know

it is a ASUS

And I have just taken the side cover off and it is very dusty,

However I find it hard to see the fans inside

I will hoover it shortly and see if that makes a difference.

Be carefull hoovering it out, as static can build up and fry your chips
Better to blow the dust out (watch your eyes).
Could be the dust has clogged a fan and it's either stopped or running below the correct speed.

That will be the one Garry. As it's under warranty, I'd try and get the seller out to sort it for you or if that fails, take the case to them. Fitting a new fan takes around 2mins at most so if neither of the above options works.. I think I have a new spare chipset fan here I can post
