Hello matey,

Nope. 1, 3 and 4 all have the same fitment.. a generator to TRU which pumps into the 28vDC. No.3 on EP has the TRU removed as the generator failed. No.2 supplies AC only for the deicing so if anything, IT should sound different from the rest.
I don't think we'll get to the bottom of this until something breaks and when it does.. I fear it will be terminal, at least for that engine.

Engine 3 FINAL!!

Pennies have dropped and the reason for the mysterious whine off No.3 has been solved. In the days when she carried pax, both inboards had air compressors fitted to supply aircon and pressurisation but when she was converted to a Merchantman in the early 70's, the compressor off No.2 was removed. Imagine how she must have sounded as a standard 953!!!

So.. there you go. Thank goodness it was nothing drastic

Well Dave as mentioned above I thought it was normal

They certainly used to have the most amazing whine and as they passed the and the prop cplan became edge on for a second the prop noise vanished and all you got was the incredbale whine.

That would also account to my wondering why the Transall didn't whine as much as the Vanguard...I always thought it was because the Vanguard was more of a lady.

Well I'm glad we've cleared that one up Dave. Although I do like a bit of a mystery!

But you know, lovely as she sounds on the ground, nothing quite beats the take-off run on 'Vickers Props' (listen again if you have it) DOESN'T SHE SCREAM?!! :tunes:

Now, if they feathered the Props on EP, couldn't they run her up to full power.......? :worried:

By some strange coincidence, I watched Vickers Props (and London Heathrow 60's/70's) this afternoon whilst taking a Viking down to Merignac and they all carry that same very distinctive whine

There are limits to what you can and can't do with the props mate and engine 1's blades are already out of kilter with the other 3. At high ground, a slight amount of foward draft can be felt off it  There is no logical reason why this has happened.. purely mechanical so they're not keen to overstress them any more than is necessary
