Classic British Flight Sim

Did anyone see the very sad photograph in yesterdays ( ? Thursday's) Daily Telegraph of a cannibalised Trident rotting away in Cyprus .I am sure Toby will know the history of this machine - it seems that it was just abandoned for no good reason ( unless it was the wing cracks)

Was shot up during the invation iirc. So was the Trident that is at Duxford allthough that was repaied.

I didn't see the pic

There were I think two, one virtually intact (5B-DAB) and another totally destroyed (5B-DAE) left there. BEA took some spares even off what was left of the destroyed machine.

Two were returned to the UK (G-ASWU/G-AVFB)

You can see the missing engines reclaimed by BEA along with many other bits

This one, series 1E 5B-DAB, was registered G-AZND for one flight back to Heathrow for scrapping and at the time the indications were that it happened, but there were never any pics.

Maybe they found it unflyable even for one trip...it certainly seems to have stayed put.

Its long been known that that was there. I have been approached by people before asking if we had photos of it and even by one group who wished to approach the UN using our name (cheeky b*gg*rs) to apply to enter the base and photograph it.

According to the list I compiled last year, this is the fate of the Cyprus Airways fleet, which was strafed by Turkish Air Force F-100 Super Sabres in 1974:

Just an addition to clarify

G-AZXM was not in the Cyprus fleet at the time having been swapped for G-AVFB a couple of years before.

But that confirms four aircraft at the time of the invasion two of which returned to the UK

...due to the military conflict between the two ethnic sides on the island.... Hmm... I would say, due to the Turkish invasion to the island, (and Greek stupidity) to be more historically right...
