Classic British Flight Sim

I hadn't seen this mentioned by anybody else, so I thought I'd post it! The Historic Aircraft Collection have 'acquired' a potentially airworthy Heinkel He 162 as part of an exchange arrangement with a Canadian museum (they also got an engine for their DH9 project, it will be nice to see that flying again).

Built largely from wood so I would think a major check would be required, not least of the glue, before it was allowed to become airborne again.

I am afraid I cannot see that happening. They did not perfrm too well in the first place! Having said that, 20 years ago an Me 262 would have been unthinkable in the air :think:

What're the chances that they've got the proper sort of engine lying about for use?

Original engines had about a 20 hour life, you want to fly it on a regular basis you are going to either get a modern reproduction or equivalent engine.

Apparently the inimitable 'Winkle' Brown is on record as saying that it was quite a pleasant and responsive aircraft to fly.

Read up on this story a bit more now. HAC are making comments like "modern brakes and engines", so it's obviously under serious consideration. As you said, whoever would have thought we'd see flying Me 262 (albeit repro).

It seems the original story could be rewritten..the He 162 that crashed at Farnborough after the war during a test flight did not crash due to a structural failure . It seems the plane flew very well until the pilot attempted to roll the plane (forbidden manoeuvre for the type) . Then crashed on earth and since that , the small nimble fighter has been considered a dangerous aircraft.... :-({|=
