In Pharmacology, all drugs have two names, a trade name and generic name. For example, the trade name of Tylenol also has a generic name of Acetaminophen. Aleve is also called Naproxen. Amoxil is also called Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer. It will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one. Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of "cocktails", "highballs" and just a good old-fashioned "stiff drink". Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.

It is of course Sildenafil Citrate (Part of my MSc in Medicinal Chemistry involved a report on Viagra).

A real thought for the day.

More than half of all humans that have ever lived have died of Malaria.
Non of the 'Big Pharma' corporations have a major Malaria research program, as they see it as a 'third world disease' and therefore not a profitable area.

That contribution has really cheered me up, Kevin . Here's another rather mind boggling thought : there are more humans alive today than have died in the whole previous history of the human race

I can't believe that that is a true fact ? (not to rob this brilliant thread), but in my mind it seems more logical that most people are already dead....

That fact has been banded around for many years, but it does seem hard to believe

Kevin that is of course:

sildenafil citrate

Generic names are not capitalised, but trade names are (eg Viagra).
None of the 'Big Pharma' corporations have a major Malaria research program

But don't the currently available drugs for malaria work?

However I agree that there are diseases not being investigated for cures because it is definitely is not a profitable area - indeed the drugs could not even be made for the price the third world countries could afford.

Hence the need for the likes of Bill Gates foundation which fund medical research.

More than half of all humans that have ever lived have died of Malaria.

Not true either. The world distribution of malaria is relatively limited. Malaria does not even feature in the WHO list of top 10 causes of mortality:
