The article makes it appear that the Viking probes irresponsibly just poured water onto the surface of Mars or heated that surface.
What it infact did, was to take small soil samples into reaction vessels within Viking. This may have killed any life forms within the samples, but not on the Martian surface.
Poor journalism again.
