Not posted in ages, but this post caught my attention as I've only recently got involved in buying a share of an Auster J1 :-$
The problem with Austers currently is the vast majority of them are on CAA Certificates of Airworthiness. There is no design authority and European legislation seems to be making it a bit unworkable. Most owners appear to want to go to a PFA permit as it reduces the cost vastly but there are limitations to what one can do.
Currently, the outcome appears to be anybodys guess!
By the way, a guess at monthly costs, to include insurance, CofA etc: £350, that's before you put any air under her wheels

Sounds a good idea having a syndicate to buy a Classic aircraft such as the Auster however there are problems in such a scheme.
Just imagine, if there were 500 of us that all chipped in to buy it, how many have a pilots' license? If say there were 50 members with a PPL or CPL that would leave 450 of us waiting a very long time for a flight!!! :sad:
The Auster was the first powered aircraft that I flew and landed flying as P2 back in the Seventies, very noisy but a true classic!! :dance:
