FSX thoughts

Post by VEGAS »

Hi all,

well my xmas pressie has well and truly been tested now and I can honestly say I'm very impressed. After firing it up for the first time and putting all the sliders to the max (like I do with FS9), I was treated to a fantastic slide show of horror! about 6-7FPS

Anyway after advice from many a wise person who have expertise in this field I have found a happy meduim and tweaked the whole thing to a very acceptable and pleasant level.

I think its very much a trial and error with this thing. Many sliders have been reduced to medium settings which still gives great views and nice details. As for the default aircraft, well they are not too bad TBH, far better than FS9's offerings but still fall way below what we can get as freeware.

My first aircraft to arrive in the FS10 hanger was Ricks chippie which runs beautifully with the sim.

After a lot of tweaking my FPS are running at a rather healthy 25-30FPS which is perfectly acceptable for my standards and have only once reverted back to FS9 over the festivites to fly the CS757, which I recently purchased.

On the whole I'm very surprised with FSX and can only offer positive feedback for it. The water textures and moving vehicles are especially pleasant to observe whilst flying. Especially if like me, you concentrate a lot on low altitude VFR flying.

I think a little patience and perserverance are required to get it running the way you like it though.

Most of the tweaks were from the AVSIM FSX forum which has stacks of tips and tricks to boost the performance.

My spec is also a big help.

Nvidia 7900 512MB GFX

To me, FSX does not look real!!

Even if I could get running well  , it would need to be at full maximum settings to get this type of thing I have in FS2004.

or this France VFR stuff..........http://www.francevfr.com/scenes.htm

It does not look like it was made by Hanna and Barbera, as I think the new FSX scenery does. maybe in few years, it will be better. That France VFR stuff is patched for FSX and I get much better FR's than the default stuff.

Ive palyed the FSX demo and I cant see myself shelling out either for FSX or the new PC to run it on. I think you can get FS9 to look and run much better than FSX on even a medicore spec. I mean, if you already have the kit to run FSX, you have nothing to lose, but for myself, I couldnt afford a PC to do FSX justice.

I was dissapointed, the demo flew well with good framerates on my set up, but after purchasing it and flying London City to Heathrow it was awful... and after finally getting the settings just right for me I'm still dissapointed as I have had to loose much of the eye candy that first attracted me to it.

The airfields are really sparse (well they are on my settings!) and I understand the UK2000 stuff isn't and won't be compatible, so for my usual haunt (RAF Cosford and the Midlands) there is not much to look forward to.

I think the secenery in FS X is much more realistic even on low settings, but I think it could be achieved with FS9 and the flight 1 Ground Effect and Terrain add ons, which is where I think i will be spending cash next....
Thanks

My PC setup is fairly modest at the moment, but I have to say that after a bit of playing with the sliders I'm very happy with it. To be fair, even on FS9 the London City scenery crippled my frame rates.

Its unrealistic to expect FSX to do everything that we are doing in FS9 with many pounds worth of Addons. So if I compare vanila FS9 with Vanila FSX on my same system, its night and day.

I dare say that as the year goes by more developers will move to the Dark Side and be able to do more exciting stuff with FSX, and all the time the hardware will get better too.
