The Sock Lives! Long Live The Sock!
That is a well known phenomenon. And they are indeed called "rollers".
We used to watch a pigeon around here that would be happily flying around with his mates and then would do a roller and lose rather a lot of altititude. He'd recover and join the others who probably thought he was a bit of a show-off. I just thought it was unusual.
Happened to mention this to a chap I worked with who knew pigeon fanciers with birds that had broken wings doing this at too low an altitude - it is thought to be the equivalent of an epileptic fit in humans. Tend to be pigeons with white and brown colouring.
Now did anybody want to know all that
