Garry J Smith uses phpBB as well, and found a way to foil the spammers. He modified the memberview files so that only admin's can see email addresses or websites. This puts a dead halt to these numbnuggets' pay per click scheme where they register for membership, then go back to view the new profile and click the webpage link a few hundred times. The other scenario that gets foiled at the same time is the web page links that end up filling an unsuspecting user's PC with enough worms to supply an entire fishing tourny!

Once a member is manually activated by the admins, their web page link and email are visible in their posts like normally are.

might be worth switching to SMF

we use that, and it has converters, so you will keep all your data, but it seems more secure
